About Kate

Kate Cotching un-masters traditional craft techniques, and much of her work exists because it has holes in it. She creates intricate pieces that bring to mind the part that time and human labour has in contemporary life. Her use of imagery often has historical references, and aims to highlight our disconnection from the way things are created and consumed,  and how this disconnection has shaped the world we live in today.

Cotching has exhibited regularly in Artist Run Spaces and Public Galleries throughout Australia since 1997. She has been awarded the Australia Council Rome Residency, the Deacons Award Travelling Scholarship to Beijing, and a residency at 200 Gertrude Street in Melbourne. Her work can be found in collections of the National Gallery of Victoria and Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery, to name just two. She has also contributed to a number of community arts projects in Bristol, UK. She holds a Bachelor of Arts (painting) and a Master of Arts (fine art) from RMIT University. Cotching has worked as a lecturer at La Trobe University's Mildura campus, and was a co-instigator of the whitecubemildura project (with Filomena Coppola). In 2015 she undertook a 10 week residency at Thirning Villa in Ashfield, Sydney and held a solo exhibition at Ararat Regional Art Gallery. Kate has a Bachelor degree in Social Work and is currently completing a Masters in Mental Health (Art Therapy) at the University of Queensland.
